29 Mar Margaret River

semi-overcast 24 °C

We wake up to pouring rain :- ( but it is warm rain :-)

The drive along the Caves Rd runs 94 Kms from Dunsborough in the north to Augusta in the South through the Margaret River region. Pretty much all that the region has to offer can be accessed along this road, underground caves, galleries, winery's, breweries and the wild coast.

Boranup Gallery

The rain has stopped and we take a visit to the Boranup Gallery, see some beautiful stuff, metalwork, woodwork, paintings etc .. but sooo expensive. As we leave the sun is trying to break through, we then drive along and pull off the road at different points, visiting various bays and stretches of wild coastline. It's wild and windy but there's plenty of people surfing and kiteboarding

We have a bit of lunch at the sea gardens cafe, a cool & funky cafe at Prevelly, big reputation for very good food and it is good, not snobby and very eclectic

30 Mar Margaret River

We go into town today and take a quick look around the shops of MR

and whilst here feel we must visit the river, and so take a brief walk by the riverbank, it's a pleasant walk with plenty of colourful bird life to see along the way

Back in the car we take a drive to a few winery's, first on the list is the Voyager Estate Winery, it's grounds are beautifully landscaped with manicured lawns, shrubbery and rose gardens

The house and restaurant are even more impressive, we taste a good few wines before leaving for nearby Leuwin Wines

Again Set in lovely grounds we taste a few more wines, then on to our last wine destination Vasse Felix, more landscaped gardens, it also boasts a sculpture walk and art gallery, plus a great restaurant, sadly we're too late to dine. We taste some more wine and take a bottle or two, we intend to get some nice food to go with our wine and enjoy later

31 Mar MR to Perth

sunny 25 °C

We leave MR today to head back up to Perth for our last 2 days in oz :-( It's about a three hour drive back

On the way we stop off at Mandurah about an hour south of Perth, a small harbour town, it's got Ocean one side and canals and lakes the other, with parks restaurants shops a harbour there's plenty going on and lots to do.

We have a coffee and cake at one of the restaurants on the boardwalk, then decide to take a trip on the water
What price ego? 6 AUSD (£3.50) in my case, I'm given a seniors concession when we take a boat trip out on the estuary, FFS!!!

Anyway after laughing in Chris's case and crying on mine we board the good ship Mandjar and 'set sail' - under diesel power, but it was well worth the concession as we see plenty of the town from the boat as it winds it's way around the harbour and through the canals with their millionaire property fronts, but best of all was out on the estuary and watching all the dolphins swimming alongside and playing in the wake of the boat. A very pleasant afternoon

We then stock up on some fine food of prawns, olives, cheese's etc to go with the wine we bought in MR, looking forward to our feast later we continue our drive north to Perth. We arrive at our b&b about an hour later, we're met by our very friendly from Sri Lanka, hosts, who when we enthuse about the smell from their kitchen insist on cooking us up some food, Chris can't say no, so our plans for dinner tonight will have to wait until tomorrow. The food and wine were lovely, and we retire to our room. I say room it's actually half the house, it's huge we have two bathrooms, kitchen, lounge, it's own staircase, front door, very new and very modern. It's in a great location for us 5 mins from the city centre & 5 mins from the airport.

1 April - Perth

It's our last day in "Australia"

It's been a great experience, we've been totally impressed with everything we've seen. Everyday has been busy and full on

It's a beautiful last sunny day so we take ourselves back to Kings Park for a few hours. We drive from and along the south side of the river, there's some lovely houses with lovely gardens overlooking parkland, the river then the city, fantastic views for them. The intention is to not be out long, get back and pack ready for our early morning flight to Singapore. We have a spot of lunch and a beer at the botanic cafe, very nice, a wander and soak up the Perth sunshine

A few hours are up but we decide to take a 20 min drive out to Cottesloe on the Ocean, to catch the last hour of sun. It's a lovely town great houses overlooking the Ocean, golf courses, restaurants and a beautiful beach. So we get our feet wet and watch the sun go down before heading back to pack for a 04.30 start in the morning

The sun goes down

2 April Perth to Singapore

We're up about 4am, coffee, the airport, drop the car off then on to Singapore.

We arrive about 1.30pm, and to our hotel by 3pm, it's very nice, by the river at Clarke Quay, a very popular and busy area, we then wait another hour or so as they've offered us an upgrade and need to prepare the room. We finally get to our room drop the cases, then take a walk around the immediate area, it's very hot and humid, different heat to Oz

We get back to the hotel, a quick lie down, freshen up then back out and hit the town!

Well a walk and something to eat anyway. It's buzzing, busy, and very loud

3 April - Singapore

sunny 42 °C

We wake up to a beautiful day in Singapore, we're up and out and it's hot, very hot.

We get on the hop on hop off tour bus to see the City and it's amazing buildings and architecture. The place is buzzing its busy, it's modern and it's vibrant

It's also very green and well planted, there's plenty of open space and parks amongst the many skyscrapers

We take a couple of routes and get off at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, amongst all the other buildings this can't be missed by the fact it appears to have a 'boat' atop its three tower blocks

The view from the top is pretty spectacular too

After a long hot day we get back to the hotel, refresh and go for a swim and laze by the pool

Out for dinner and back for some wine on the hotel terrace

4 April - Singapore

Although overcast, it's another very hot and humid day

We take a cruise on the river and around the bay, there's a running commentary and you certainly get the feel of how the city has grown and developed and developing

The sky looks threatening and we can hear thunder in the distance, there's no rain, just as the sun then manage's to break through

We catch the tour bus for a different route/view of the city and get off at Gardens by the Bay, it's a fantastic landscaped garden, very futuristic, biodiverse, conservation, domes, etc etc

As you can imagine they put on an amazing light show at night

The Marina Bay Sands

After another long day we get to the hotel, freshen up and back out for a bite and drink. We need to be up early as off to Bali in the morning

5 April - Singapore to Bali

We wake early to the storms that had threatened yesterday, but by the time we've packed they've already passed, it's still very hot and humid

We're at the airport by 8am and ready for our fifth flight to Denpasar, Bali

It's 3pm by the time we're in a taxi and on our way to our hotel in Ubud. After an hour and half and driving through chaos we find the junjungan hotel and spa, a small Balinese boutique hotel, only 10 rooms so tranquil, peaceful and the staff are so polite, courteous. We're greeted at the outdoor reception with a cool watermelon drink and shown to our room

We're relaxed and chilled already, a quick freshen up and we take up the offer of afternoon tea, very nice

Our room and view

A late dinner at the hotel restaurant

6 April Ubud

It's a lovely sunny day

We take the hotel shuttle bus into town, it's busy busy busy, hot and humid, and have a look around the shops, markets and stalls

The sky begins to change from blue to grey and is looking ominous, the next thing everyone's running for shelter as a storm breaks, it's torrential rain but at least it cools the temperature down, it lasts about an hour, then all is calm again

We decide to leave. It's nice to get back to the tranquility of the hotel and after drying off, we indulge in a spot of afternoon tea

We're back out in the evening for dinner

it's just like being on holiday :- )

7 April - Ubud

Another sunny start to the day, with temp around the 30's

After a relaxed breakfast we go back into town to check out a recommended restaurant as it's had rave reviews, it seems pretty good with some great views over the river, so we make a reservation for tomorrow evening

We're able to have a better look around town today after yesterday's tropical downpour

A bit of shopping, followed by a cool drink in one of the bars and some people watching

We're back at the hotel by 4, we do like our afternoon tea, and a swim

We're staying in Junjungan a small village just outside Ubud, about 700 people, and tonight the villagers are performing the Kecak or 'monkey' dance - play in the open air at the village temple

Great night, fantastic show

Loving Bali, love the Balinese
